Ideal Weight Calculator
Determine your Ideal Body Weight (IBW) based on medical formulas and healthy BMI ranges
How to Use This Calculator
- Select your Biological Sex, as medical ideal weight formulas use sex-specific base constants.
- Choose your preferred unit system (Imperial or Metric).
- Enter your standing height accurately.
- Click “Calculate Ideal Weight” to receive your target weight estimates based on classic medical formulas and healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) ranges.
The Formulas Used
Ideal Body Weight (IBW) formulas compute target mass based on inches or centimeters over a baseline height of 5 feet (60 inches / 152.4 cm):
• Male: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
• Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
Miller Formula:
• Male: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
• Female: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet
Healthy BMI Range: Weight corresponding to BMI 18.5 – 24.9
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Ideal Body Weight (IBW)?
Ideal Body Weight was originally created for medical dosing calculations (such as ventilator settings and medication administration). Today, it is widely used as a general benchmark for healthy target weight ranges.
Why are there multiple different IBW formulas?
Different researchers (Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi) published distinct empirical models based on varying clinical populations and datasets over time.
Does Ideal Body Weight account for muscle mass or frame size?
No, standard IBW formulas do not factor in body composition, muscle density, or skeletal frame size. Athletes with high muscle mass may weigh more than their IBW without carrying excess body fat.
What is considered a healthy BMI range for adults?
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines a healthy adult Body Mass Index (BMI) as falling between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m².
